Slumdog! Yes slumdog!!! But what's next ?

This saturday I watched Slumdog millionare, the most applauded and most acclaimed movie of the year worldwide. While watching and after leaving the theatre, obviously question was to me by myself "what's my opinion, what's my view about the movie ?". And really speaking, I went to a very unstable state while watching the movie, and after the movie I just had no consciousness to react. Lots of things going in my mind, was thinking that some people have minted millions by making a slumdog millionare in reel-life, but then what about when you get back to real-life ? I was wondering whether in such a media-ic environment, has anyone out of those movie-makers, loud-applauders, or any social-activists atleast thought of doing something of that life ? Movie makers have got various awards, and various nominations, applauders got limelight, and social-activists have got a issue against the name of the movie. That's all. When Bachchan tried to say his view about the enviroment shown in the movie, media displayed it in its own wrong way, and made that too an issue, which he himself cleared in another blog.
In my opinion, yes the movie was great, the concept was nice and its a must watch. But then again, this doesn't deserve that much hype what it is getting. It has its flaws, lacks at some or the other points. Only thing which is far apart from our views, reviews and comments is the Rahman's music and Gulzar's lyrics.
A director came, casted some of the indian actors, some non-indians, the greatest composer and lyricist of the world, and made use of the slums and the indian poverty, a movie got produced, got a lot of awards and lot of nominations, but what's next ? The real question is "what's next ?"
Probably, foreigners are fond of Indian-slum and this might be the reason why it got so popular all over the world. Is this slum and poverty is going to remain like this for many others to explore more and more ideas and mint millions ?
I feel very bad when I see many news reporters are now going to slums and trying to capture the life of those and publishing it just for the sake of increasing clicks on their news-site or TRP of their news channels, but I ask them, what is the use, how are they going to benefited by doing this ? One example is this rediff link, I got from one of my friend's gtalk status-message "He gets paid only 10 paise per shoe". It would have been a lot better and beneficial if that correspondent would have done something for that family using the most powerful tool with him the so-called media. He could have given some information to its readers if any individual or any NGO would like to come for help.
Anyways, I have again only one thing to say, we as a Indian should understand our responsibility and should do something for our country in some or the other form.
For those, who have watched movies before it gets released, they are already acting against Indian Economy and helping Pakistan and Dubai based Piracy business to grow. But I guess that is the way how we are used to like the slums.

You make a good point about "getting used to" - whether slums or piracy. Totally with you on that one.

Regarding the "what next" point - well I'm not so sure. I dont think the objective of the movie was to give a solution to the problem. It was more of a "this is the state of affairs; this is the truth" statement. If the viewers want to do something about it, they have to search for avenues. After all, in order to solve a problem, it is necessary to be aware that the problem exists in the first place!

By the way, my opinion about the mmovie's main objective not being to offer a solution was strengthened by the second half's typical Bollywood masala.

And just like you, I too rate the movie as a must-watch. At least for people to be aware of what really goes on in the slums.

Hi Kiran,
Yes that's true that it was not the objective of the movie but I just think that when you mint millions by using something, you have some responsibilities also for the same, and that's what I was trying to point-out.
Yes the lyrics were great, and so was the ultimate music. But we have had "Aamir", "Rang de Basanti", and some more which also states very practically that "yes this happens", those hasn't got that much apploud as this is getting. I am no again this applaud but with that comes the responsiblity which I wanted to keep in front.

Nice post , But i don't agree with the comment "when you mint millions by using something, you have some responsibilities" What does this mean?
You can't expect people to share what they have earned unless they wish to.Nobody stopped anyone from minting money on any subject ,If it is a foreigner , so what ? Lots of movies have been made on poverty and social issues , Should they share part of their earnings as well .
According to me ,if movie shows the reality in the society , it is upto the individuals to take initiatives and solve issues.Movie-makers are just like any other businessman ,You can't force charity on them .

Hi Ritesh,
Please don't take the comment the way media takes, there is nothing like foreigner here, I forgot to put disclaimers in my post something like -"This is what I meant" and "This is what I didn't mean ".
See the point here is not about charity, what I am trying to point out that its not worth that hype it is getting without any social cause. I mean we have had many brilliant films earlier, but this one seems more getting attention just because of slums being shown.
